Weekly Update for the week of November 14th:

Students have been focusing on "gratitude" as the PSF(Personal Success Factor) for the month of November. They have been engaging in classroom discussions on what having gratitude means, what they are grateful for, and how they can show gratitude. In Social Studies they wrote letters to Mrs. Bryan-Doherty's uncle who is an Army veteran. They are very special letters! We appreciate students reflecting daily on how they can show gratitude to their classmates, teachers, friends, lunch staff, custodial staff and more!

Here are a few reminders for the upcoming week...

1. 1st grade will be taking a field trip to the Arvada Center on Wednesday, December 7. Please see the permission slip in your child's Thursday folder.  To cover the ticket price, we must ask families to contribute $12 per student.  Due to limited seat availability in the theater, we will not be able to take extra chaperones on this trip.

2. Specials change on Monday: Ms. Hernandez's class switches to Art and Mrs. B's class switches to Music. Gym day remains the same!

3. If you have any maps at home...please send them to school for Geography. They will be put to good use!!

4. NO SCHOOL November 21st-25th Thanksgiving break

Mrs. Bryan-Doherty and Ms. Hernandez

What's Up for the Week of October 24th

We are wrapping up another great week of learning! To all the families we have met at conferences so far, we must say it is a pleasure to be able to talk with you about your child's glows and grows. Remember, conferences are for parents only. Thanks for understanding!

Also, because we begin conferences almost immediately after school lets out, it is important to make sure you pick up your child on time at the end of the day.
Kiddos should also know what they are to do at the end of each day whether it's taking the bus, going to Discovery Link, Enrichment, or being picked up. If there are any changes, please notify us immediately so we can pass the information on to your child.

Speaking of time, PLEASE refrain from picking up your child before the bell rings at the end of the day. In Ms. Hernandez's class kids are in the middle of Readers Workshop, Guided Reading and Intervention. In Mrs. B's class kids are in the middle of Science or Number Corner. Many of the kids being picked up early out of convenience are missing out on valuable learning time and the phone calls from the office are a huge disruption to the class. If your child is being picked up early due to an appointment, let us know so we aren't caught off guard when the phone rings in the middle of a lesson.

Halloween is coming up soon and we are ready to celebrate! The Halloween parade will begin at 2:30 with classroom parties following. Students are to bring their costumes to school and then change into them before the parade. Parent volunteers are welcome to come and help kids change around 2 PM. If you think you can help out, email Ms. Hernandez or Mrs. Bryan-Doherty. Our Halloween Party coordinators will be in touch with families in the next few days.
NOTE: WCE and DPS are asking that NO students wear clown costumes during the school parade and party because of the latest incidents involving clown costumes. Thanks you!

New Specials rotation begins tomorrow.
Ms. Hernandez's class will go to Technology and Mrs. B's class will have Art. Remember, PE days are always the same.

Check out our class Shutterfly account! https://mrsbandmshernandez.shutterfly.com/

Lastly, NO SCHOOL ON OCTOBER 27TH AND 28TH!

Thanks and as always, please email us with any questions or concerns!

Your Child's Teachers,
Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. Bryan-Doherty

Socktober! October is Socktober!! WCE is collecting new socks for 2 shelters downtown through the month of October. Socks are the least donated item at shelters and very needed. Our FAVORITE president...Kid President is the creator of this wonderful movement. Learn more here Kid President Socktober Video

**One way to show our support is Crazy Sock Day on Friday. Wear your craziest socks!!

BOOK Fair is next week! Please visit the book fair in the library before and/or after school. Great way to build your child's home library!!

Halloween Festivities--We love Halloween at WCE! We are planning on our annual Halloween parade on Monday, October 31st. Kiddos are to bring their costumes to school and then change into them before our parade in the afternoon. Class parties will follow after the conclusion of our parade. More information on parade and party times will be updated next week. If your kiddo does not celebrate Halloween, please let us know as there will be an alternate activity.

No school for kiddos on Thursday, October 27th and Friday, October 28th.

What's Up for the week of October 10th...

Hello! Here is the link to sign up for a time for your child's Fall conference. The allotted time is 15 minutes and you will meet with both of your child's teachers. We look forward to meeting with you!!

http://www.slyreply.com/app/sheets/4psw222p4vzv/

Food Drive: Please send in canned fruit to add to the pantry for families in need. Thank you!!

Please check the individual tabs for weekly or biweekly for academic updates.

What's up for the week of October 3rd...

Hello! What a busy week we have had! Ms. Hernandez and I were talking today after school about how amazed we are at the ability levels of students. We are only 28 days into the school year and, we as teachers, are consistently seeing many students working independently challenging themselves and setting goals for themselves. The focus on growth mindset is seen throughout so many areas of the day, as well. For instance while, creating the "addition strategies" chart below, students were insistent that the word "yet" was included after the disadvantage statement. A strong growth mindset really impacts your child's learning at school and at home:)

Some important information...

*The Book it to the CREEK celebration is this Friday! Here are the times that 1st graders will be celebrating...
  • Book it to the CREEK celebration (gym)........9:20-10:15
  • Book it to the CREEK party (playground)...... 10:55-11:35
  • Lunch for 1st grade ..........................11:35-12:00
*Classes will switch to their new special this Friday; 1st grade doesn't have specials Friday because of Book it to the CREEK. New specials as of Monday are...Ms. Hernandez's homeroom will switch to Drama and Mrs. Bryan-Doherty's class will switch to technology. Gym will remain on the same days.

*Homework: Thank you for instilling good homework rituals with your child at home! Remember to log those reading minutes! Please remember to only do the assigned Math pages for each evening. Math homework is to only practice the skill taught that DAY and to show you what they learned. If they get behind, of course there will be a need to do multiple pages in an evening. However, for students to complete all of the homework the first night that it's sent home does not strengthen their Math capability. By your child completing one page of review nightly, they are retrieving the information from that day and applying it. If they are able to explain to you what they have done, if they can teach you...even better!

*Conferences: A Slyreply will be sent out this weekend for you to sign up for a conference time. We look forward to chatting about your child/children!

*Library information...look below!!!

Thank you for entrusting your child/children to us daily! We are thoroughly enjoying watching them grow academically, socially and emotionally!

With gratitude,

Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. Bryan-Doherty

Library Information

Families,

Some kiddos forgot to bring back their library books today. Here is a message from our librarian, Rachael Nadler.

Hey Parents! Are you curious about what book your child has checked out? Go to lion.dpsk12.org and click ‘Login.’ Type in your child’s last name and student ID (lunch number). Not only can you see what book they checked out, but you can access many free databases at home!
Thanks!

Our classes will be going to the library to check out books every other Monday, so the next library date is October 10th.

Thanks so much for helping your kiddos to keep track of their items.

Ms. Hernandez
What's Up for the week of September 26th...

The first day of fall is here and the chill was definitely in the air this morning. Today was also Kindness Day where the kids talked about and wrote down little things they could do each day to show kindness whether at home, school, or out and about. It was refreshing to hear their ideas and we hope they will continue to carry out random acts of kindness. Check out the following link that was shown to students that showcases random acts of kindness by a young woman...20 random acts of kindness

--Please make sure you check your child's backpack for their Thursday folder. Inside you will find a sight word packet with a letter stating that your child was assessed at the beginning of the year on sight words along with the list of words to cut apart and use as flash card practice.
They also received two issues of the Scholastic News. This is intended for your kiddo to keep at home and read. Please check the Reading tab for more information on Sight Words and Scholastic News information.

--Ms. Hernandez is looking for a homeroom classroom volunteer for stuffing Thursday folders. Email her if you are interested. Spot has been filled.

--Library books for BOTH classes are due on Monday in order to check out another.

--Fall conferences will begin in October. We will be sending a Slyreply out to sign up for a time to meet with both Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. B. We look forward to talking with you about your child's first part of the school year!

--Mrs. Bryan-Doherty will be sending out two Slyreplys this weekend...one for weekends with our classroom hamster, Mr. Nibbles and one for Math volunteers. Details will be in the Slyreply. Thanks!!

--We would like to welcome Molly McMorrow as our paraprofessional. She will be splitting her time between our two classes. Huge thank you to the PTA for making it possible to have the extra help in our classrooms! Here is a little bio about her.

Molly was raised in Thorndike, Maine. After attending college at Western Michigan University, she found herself in Denver and has been here for nearly 10 years. Molly spent three years at Aurora Public Schools as a Community Coordinator at Lansing Elementary School.

She enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and two boys, Olen and Cade.
Have a great weekend!!
Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. Bryan-Doherty

What's Up for Next Week...

It's hard to believe we are closing in on the 4th week of school. The kiddos are working hard and learning how to be independent learners and thinkers. They are also learning how to collaborate with their peers and learn from them without just asking for the answer.

Some reminders for the upcoming week...

Specials for next week: Mrs. Bryan-Doherty's class will stay with  Drama and P.E. still on Thursdays and Ms. Hernandez's class will stay with Music and P.E. still on Fridays.
Please send a snack and water bottle with your kiddo everyday. Headaches often happen from a lack of water. If your child wants to bring their water bottle home every night that is fine. Otherwise, they will be sent home on Friday.

Remember that Fridays are Spirit wear day!! Have your child wear their WCE gear with pride!

Please check out the Reading, Writing, Math and Science tabs for more content updates and what kiddos are doing in the classroom.

Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. Bryan-Doherty

What's Up for Next Week...

What a fantastic week 3 we have had with your children! We are so impressed with their ability to increase their stamina to work independently, organize their materials, and respecting their classroom and each other. Classroom Update September 1-8

Families,

What a pleasure it was to see so many of you at Back to School Night last night. If you were unable to attend just know you can find all pertinent classroom information here on our blog.

Please check your child's backpack for their Thursday folder and homework we talked about last night. Your child needs to write his or her own name on the homework calendar and then you can help keep track of the minutes they read. Folders and homework return next Thursday with your child.

Remember, 20+ minutes of reading each day and that includes any and all environmental print, you reading to your child, your child reading to you, siblings reading to your child, your child reading to the family dog--you get the idea. We just want them to read, read, read and enjoy reading!

**No school on Monday--enjoy the extra time with your kiddos!

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. B

Classroom Update for August 22-26

Hi Families!

We have almost made it through the first week of school! WHEW!
What a busy week it's been getting to know your kiddos and teaching them the rituals and routines of first grade. We must say they have come in well-prepared from kindergarten, and when we did our first Turn and Talk they knew what to do!

We begin every morning in our homerooms with a morning meeting and greeting each other. Not only does this help us to learn who our classmates are, it helps us establish a caring community of learners by talking about our Personal Success Factors (PSF), what we can do as learners to overcome obstacles, and just talking with one another before our busy day begins.

This month's PSF is Growth Mindset. If you aren't familiar with what Growth Mindset is, ask your children. They can tell you all about it! You can also click the link at the top of our blog under Character Education to find out more.

Some important reminders:
Back to School Night--Wednesday, August 31st at 5, 6, and 7 PM, on the hour.
Picture Day--September 13th
Every Friday--Spirit Day, Wear your WCE spirit wear!

Ms. Hernandez's Homeroom--Tennis shoes needed EVERY Friday for P.E.

That just about covers it. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us!

Ms. Hernandez and Mrs. B

Welcome!

Families,

Just a few things to get you started on the first day of school.

School Drop Off & Pick Up
We will meet students on the blacktop at the east end . Students will be picked up at this same location when the bells rings at 3:45. Any students not picked by 4:00 will be walked to the office to call home.

Breakfast
A free breakfast is served every day in the cafeteria beginning at 8:40am. Please know that playground duty does not start until 8:45am, and there is no adult supervision prior to this time.

Kiss and Go Morning
To foster independence and build a strong community, we have a kiss and go policy on the blacktop in the mornings. Parents will not be permitted to walk their child to the classroom, with an exception being made the first day of school. Parents may come to the classroom on the first day for 15 minutes to take pictures. After 15 minutes has passed, parents will be asked to leave and implement Kiss and Go Mornings for the remainder of the year.

Parents are not permitted to wait outside your child's classroom for any reason during the school year. Please be respectful and mindful that teachers are preparing for the day, attending morning staff meetings, or having private meetings with parents.

Tardy Bell
The first bell rings at 8:55. The tardy bell will then ring at 9:00. Please make sure your child is on time to ensure they are able to participate in our daily community circle. This is a VERY important part of our day.

Water Bottles
Each student should have a water bottle that is kept in the classroom throughout the week. Water bottles will be sent home every Friday to be cleaned and should return to school on Monday. Please make sure it is labeled with your child's name.
If your child needs a water bottle in their lunch, please, pack a separate water bottle in their lunch. This way, they will not need to come back to the classroom for their water bottle before lunch.

Snack
We have several allergies in our classrooms this year, so we will not participate in shared snacks.
If you would like your child to have a snack during extra recess, please do so by sending it in a small container in their lunch box or backpack. They will pull it out in the morning to place in our snack bin as part of their morning routine. Snacks should be healthy and easy for students to grab and go during recess.

We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Warm regards,

Mrs. B and Ms. Hernandez

Students are keeping a weather observation journal, charting weather patterns and learning about the different types of clouds. They will be doing two experiments to see how clouds hold water and how the water cycle works. We have done one experiment exploring the rise and fall of the liquid in a thermometer using ice water and hot water. Hope they share their knowledge with you!!

My daughter, Sophia, came to visit for take your child to work day:) She loves getting to know the big kid 1st graders:)

    Hello Parents!

We are coming into our final month of school. Yikes! How time flies:) While this is an exciting time for kiddos; the thoughts of summer break. It's also a time that negative behaviors tend to go on the rise. Many kiddos are nervous about losing the structure of school, going to a new grade level and classroom, having a new teacher, etc. To calm some of these nerves, we will be visiting all 2nd grade classrooms, meeting the teachers and having a question and answer session to hopefully help students to feel comfortable about the upcoming new school year. While I am very sensitive to the needs of every student, I am also very clear in my expectations. I do firmly believe in "restorative justice" for kiddos whom are having troubles with following classroom and school rules. Examples are...having trouble in the lunchroom? kiddos will clean lunch tables for half of recess...shouting/acting out when the teacher is teaching? cleaning desks during 2nd recess...not treating other students with kindness? writing apology notes...being disrespectful during Specials?...helping that Specials teacher with jobs in their classroom. I would like for these behavior challenges to be a learning experience and not just a punishment (sitting on the wall at 2nd recess). I am patient...but I will hold the students accountable for their behavior until the last day of school. I remind them daily that I care about them...if I didn't, I wouldn't take the time to teach them between right and wrong. I want them to be the best they can be and be proud of THEMSELVES! I will keep parents in the loop if their kiddo is having trouble and so we can work as a team. I'm hoping that the last month goes smoothly but wanted to let y'all know my "plan of action"...shall we need it:) May the force be with us! Thank you!

Here is all you need to know for next week and then some!

    Specials Schedule:
    Monday: E day (Music)
    Tuesday: A day (Art)
    Wednesday: B day (Technology)
    Thursday: C day (Drama)
    Friday: D day (Gym)

    1. Our Mother's Day Tea will be held Friday, May 6th at 2:45 in our classroom. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and other special guests only need to bring a tea cup for them and their kiddo. A special time is being planned:)

    2. Spelling Bee: the kiddos representing our classroom in the school spelling bee on Friday, May 6th at 12:40 in the gym are Keaton, Sam, Xavier and Lily!! For 1-3 grades the format is class vs. class format; not an elimination.

    3. I am awaiting clarification on the next CREEK kid assembly. It is being rescheduled because of a conflict with another school event. I will email parents tomorrow and let y'all know. Thanks!

    4. A Field Day lunch slip came home today. PLEASE send this back Monday to get a proper count for how many lunches to order. Field Day is May 13th. More details to come. Thank you!

    5. A bright orange form went home today, as well, to let WCE know if your child/children will be attending WCE next year. Please fill this out and send back next week. It is VERY helpful for us to get an idea of how many spots are open for incoming students. Thanks!

    6. End of Year assessments: Ms. Hernandez and I will begin doing end of year assessments on Monday. These consist of a reading assessment done one-on-one with the teacher, a writing sample and a Math assessment that is part written and part one-on-one. I will be giving the Math assessment in "chunks" as oppose to all at once in hopes of not stressing the kiddos out. We will still be doing Math Stations everyday and testing in small group with me. Parents will be seeing these assessments at their child's student led conference on May 26th after school.

    7. Library Books: The last day to check out books will be next Thursday and ALL books will be due back by May 13th so that the librarian can get all the books checked back in by the end of the school year.

    8. NO SCHOOL on May 30th Memorial Day

    9. June 1st we will be going on a field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. This will be a GREAT field trip to end our Science unit of life cycles and our weather unit:) Chaperones are needed!! The more the better and the smaller groups!! PLEASE email me if you are interested. It is a VERY fun field trip:)

Whew! I think that is all for now. I will let y'all know if anything else comes up! thank you for your continued support at home and allowing for me to teach your children:)
