October and November--

Kids have learned -ck, the FLOSS rule, and 

magic e

-ck is found at the end of a short word, after a short vowel--pack, pick, peck, pock, puck

The FLOSS rule is if a short word ends in f, l, or s then that consonant is doubled--cuff, hill, toss

Magic e makes the vowel before it say its name--cake, mete, kite, home, cute
