Classroom Updates for week of December 7th

Hello Everyone!

I sent a separate email regarding my medical leave that will begin this Monday. My surgery is next Wednesday at Mayo Clinic. I will be returning January 20th and Ms. Lowenburg will be the long term sub:) Very happy that the kiddos will have the same teacher back from the beginning of the year:)  Here are email addresses for Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Lowenburg...

Suzanne_hernandez@dpsk12.org
(Ms. Hernandez's blog for Literacy updates http://www.firstgrade411.com/)

Elizabeth_lowenburg@dpsk12.org

sara_bryan-doherty@dpsk12.org

I will also be checking email, as soon as I am feeling ok. It will be hard to not check in;) Please, please don't hesitate to email me if you have a question or concern that you feel I should know about. It's going to be hard to be away from the classroom!

I am looking forward to getting this last part of my "journey" finished and move on. I appreciate all of your kind words, thoughts, prayers, hugs and smiles. I work in such an amazing community and feel so proud to be a part of it:)

Here is all you need to know for next week...

Specials:
Monday: A Day (Art)
Tuesday: B Day (Technology)
Wednesday: C Day (Drama)
Thursday: D Day (Gym)
Friday: E Day (Music)

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND A SNCAK EVERYDAY!

PLEASE SEND A WATER BOTTLE ON MONDAY! It is MUCH more efficient for kiddos to be able to go to their water bottle in the classroom than go to the water fountain in the hallway.:)

1. Homework: Homework will come home tomorrow in your child's Thursday folder. The homework packet will have a calendar attached to the front of it. PLEASE follow the order of doing the homework sheets as the calendar has it laid out. Obviously, there will be nights that homework can't be done because of after school activities, it's just fine to catch up another night. However, please don't have your child complete the whole packet the first night they get it. It won't help them to do it all in one sitting; the material won't be absorbed. There will be work from Ms. Hernandez for Literacy and Math from me/Ms. Lowenburg. Homework will (usually) go home on Thursday and due back the following Thursday. I will be keeping track of who is turning in homework and who is not. I have talked to the kiddos about finding a special place at home to do their homework and to keep their homework so they can find it easily and not lose it. Also, I told them I don't want to hear "My Mom forgot to put it in my back pack so I don't have it" on the day it's supposed to be turned in. It's their responsibility to get their folder to school and turned in;).

2. Math: We are continuing to learn about subtraction and multiple strategies to solve equations. We have been specifically working on "decomposing" numbers to make the problem easier to solve. If students can give me the answer doing the work in their heads, I challenge them to show me their thinking on their white boards. We are working on writing their thinking down on paper, as well. example: 9 + 6 =  ? "First, I decomposed the 6 into a 1 and 5. Then, I made a friendly 10 with the 9 and 1. Next, I put the 5 into the ones place in the 10. Finally, I knew the answer was 15." It's crazy cool to see the way that the students are able to apply these strategies and explain them. They are really catching on!

3. Flat Stanley project: Coming home in your child's Thursday folder tomorrow will be a manila envelope with materials for the Flat Stanley project. There is a parent letter in it that will explain the project. It's so much and really helps the kiddos learn about other states and communities. If you have any questions, let me know:)

4. Geography: The kiddos are working on their 3D maps of a town that they created with two other students. They are taking their learning about maps and compiling it all into this project. They are creating a town/map that has at least 10 buildings that make their community safe and successful (police/fire station, school, bank, grocery store, post office, etc.), including a map key and compass rose and making sure it's to scale. They are having a blast! The team work and problem solving strategies are amazing to watch ! The maps will be on display in the library starting next Tuesday. Stop by and check them out!!  Here are some photos...

Morning Class:

Students worked collaboratively to create their town.

matching the buildings on the map with the symbols in the map key.

Road construction time!!

Buildings are starting to go up!

Afternoon Class:

THANK YOU for all of the maps that were sent in!! They will be used next week:)

Have a great weekend!

Hello Parents!

Well, we are almost to Thanksgiving break:) I know that I am very thankful for the amazing students and families I have the pleasure of knowing this year. I look forward to the adventures to come and seeing how far these kiddos will go academically, socially and emotionally. Just a reminder, my reconstruction surgery is set for December 8th. My last day will be December  4th and I will return on January 20th. I am going to miss the students and the normal day to day happenings of the classroom, the hugs, but I am very anxious to get this final step of the process completed and move on:) I appreciate all of the support that I have received. You have no idea how much it truly means. I believe in each and every one of these kiddos and want them to believe in themselves. They have the ability, strength, humor, wisdom and courage to go far and I look forward to seeing how far they will go. I will be in contact through email if you should need anything. As of right now, Ms. Lowenburg is still set to return to cover for me. The SAME structures and expectations that I have set up in the classroom will stay in place while I am gone. The students have made great strides; working independently, doing their best work and being proud of themselves. I am PROUD of them:)

Here is every thing you need to know for the week we return from break...

Contact Ms. Erin with any questions

3. We are currently studying maps in our Geography unit. If you have any type of map at home, please send them to the classroom to be studied and compared with other maps. Thank you!!

4. Math homework will be gin to go home on Thursday December 3rd. It will be a quick review of what the kiddos did that day. Ms. Hernandez and I will make a calendar  that will reflect her Literacy homework and my Math homework and what to complete each evening. The goal is that the nightly homework consist of 5-10 minutes of Math, 10 minutes of handwriting and 20 minutes of reading (you reading to your child or your child reading to you). We want  the students to get used to getting into the pattern of being responsible for getting their homework done, keeping it in a safe place at home and getting it back to school. Frontrow can be OPTIONAL for students to do at home:)

Ms. Lowenburg will continue to update the blog while I am gone:)

Thanks for everything! Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!!

Classroom Update for Week of November 16th

Hello Everyone!

Thank you so very much for the gift card to Nordstrom:) It's very appreciated! The best part were the cards from the kiddos and the sweet messages in them. I keep them throughout the school year and enjoy reading them from time to time. Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to come in for conferences and learning about what your child is doing and how you can support them. I really enjoy getting the opportunity to speak with parents and talk about the progress that their child is making:)

Example: 9+5=___  I know that 5 can be broken into 4 and 1 I add the 1 to 9 to make 10 and then add the 4 to 10 to get 14. As always, this is just ONE strategy that kiddos can chose to use or not, depending on how their Math brain works:)

6. Social Studies: We will be gin our Geography unit this week. We will work on it for two weeks. Students will start with maps and their parts/vocabulary, as well as, making maps; of their bedroom, classroom, city, and state. We will also explore the globe. Students will do a final 3D map project with a small group to present to the class:)

I believe this all for now. I will let you all know if anything else comes up! Thanks!

Classroom Update for week of November 9th

Hello Everyone!

Wow! What a week! I don't know if it's been the candy, the weather or the time change but the classroom and school have been lively:)

We have been working very hard this week on being respectful of our peers. Turning and listening to them when they talk and giving positive feedback. It's important to student's learning to be able to do this not just because it's respectful but students will be learning to engage in "academic talk" throughout the year. Academic talk will be used during partner and small group work in Math to take their learning beyond the presented question/problem. We are making sure that their bodies are facing the speaker, eyes on the speaker and ears listening for thing that they could respond to.

Our Personal Success Factor for the month is GRATITUDE:) We will talking in the classroom about how we can show gratitude to classmates, parents, family, friends and others.

We will be starting our platooning schedule on Monday:) Here it is...

9:00-9:15 Morning Meeting

Classroom Updates for Week of October 26th

Hello Everyone! Hope you had a fabulous weekend! My husband and I attended a friend's wedding in Breckenridge and it was just beautiful. It was the first time I had been up to the mountains since by mastectomy and I forgot how much I enjoyed the fresh air and scenery:)

The kiddos and I have been talking a lot about platooning and how some things will change but a lot will stay the same. On this note, I wanted to share some information with you  that I recently shared with a parent that gave some clarity. A parent was wondering why November 9th to begin platooning? Why not after the holiday break? After the break was when we originally wanted to implement the platooning schedule, however, I have my reconstruction surgery on December 9th and will be out from December 7th-January 20th. There was NO way that I was not going to be there for the kiddos when they started platooning and if we waited for my return, it would be too late. The 1st grade team  truly believes that platooning is going to give the students SO much more academically, while still giving them the foundation of their homeroom environment by returning to their homeroom teacher (me) at the end of the day. Therefore, we decided to start as soon as we could so that my kiddos could start this transition with me and I could be there for Ms. Hernandez's students when they begin to come to my room for Math. I hope this clears up any wonderings you had about the "why November?" question. :) Again, Ms. Hernandez will be at your child's conference to meet you and get to know your kiddo and Ms. Marshall and I are putting together a "Math Night" to better help you understand what we are doing in Math and how you can help your child at home with Math. More than likely this will occur the week after Thanksgiving. I will let you know when the date is set with the office.

Here is all you need to know for the week:

Specials:

Monday: C Day (Drama)
Tuesday: D Day (Gym)
Wednesday: E Day (Music)
Thursday: A Day (Art)
Friday: B Day (Technology)

1. If you have not signed up for your child's Fall conference, please do so at the following link http://www.slyreply.com/app/sheets/md1jqmzmcrh6/

2. Halloween Party~! Will be this Friday. Before the party there will be a parade at 2:30  around the outside of the school. Kiddos will put their costumes on BEFORE the parade so please send them in a bag. The parade procession will go out the lunchroom doors and around the school on the sidewalk and back in the lunchroom doors.  After the parade the party will begin around 2:45 in the classroom. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate with their child. If you are able to volunteer, please check out the following link and sign up http://www.slyreply.com/app/sheets/qt5nbempbcjf/
We REALLY need volunteers for the stations, so sign up!! It will be a lot of fun!! Thank you:)

3. Socktober has been a HUGE success! We have 68 pairs of socks!! That's amazing! Thank you for your support! You still have 4 days to send some in:) I am going to get in touch with a shelter about dropping them off. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. I thought it might have an impact if kiddos met me at the shelter with their parents, if they are able to, to drop the socks off. However, I'm not sure if this might be too much for the kiddos? I will let you know:)

4. Specials Open House: The Specials Team (Gym, Art, Drama, Technology and Music) are having an open house to give you some insight into what the kiddos do when they are in Specials. I sent the flyer in an email yesterday. Let me know if you didn't receive it. The open house is Monday November 9th from 4-7 p.m. Below are the times for our classroom...

5. Please continue to send in the sight word lists as your kiddo is able to SAY all the words. For kiddos who can get through all 22 lists and recite the words, they will begin back at list 1 and work on WRITING the words:)

6. The Math training that I attended last week supplied teachers with some amazing games that can be played directly at each kiddo's independent level . Many of these games require kiddos to use manipulatives to represent numbers and break apart numbers. I will be discussing this more at conferences. In the mean time, could you see if you have any of the following  in your home that you wouldn't mind donating to the classroom?

Here is what we need:

lids of all sorts--small and large
old metal keys
hotel keys
mardi gras beads
bread bag clips (the little yellow and green guys)
small and large puffy balls (pom poms)
clear liter soda bottles (we will cut the tops off and use them for storage)
nuts, screws, and bolts from your tool chest
old or mismatched shoe laces
tooth picks (the flat kind)
beads--any sparkly ones will be a hit
dry beans--Lima, pinto, black, kidney, or any other kind

Please put the items in a plastic bag and label "math materials". Your child will be so proud to help supply our classroom with materials for Math!

I think that is all! If anything else comes up, I will let you know! Have a great week!

Mrs. Bryan-Doherty:)

Here are some photos from last week in the classroom:) Enjoy!
