Classroom Update for week of March 21st

Here are some photos of the last week's activities in our busy classroom!

Students did an organized plan of what they wanted their diorama to look like before starting construct it.

Building 2D and 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. Easier to count the sides and vertices this way:)

Diorama time!!

The students have done an AMAZING job on their dioramas!!

Learning about composite shapes; a large shape made up of smaller shapes.

After building the composite shape with blocks, students then traced the shapes they used onto paper using a shape template:)

Hello! I hope you all were able to enjoy this first day of Spring! On that note, please remember that our Spring Break week is March 28th-April 1st. Here is everything else you need to know for this busy week...

Tuesday: B Day (Technology)
Wednesday: C Day (Drama)
Thursday: D Day (Gym)
Friday: E Day (Music)

1. The 1st Grade Performance is this Thursday at 6 p.m. in the cafetorium. There will be a day performance, as well, at 10 a.m. for the school kiddos. Here is the schedule for Thursday evening...
4:00-5:45 Parents can come to the      classroom and see their child's animal        research report and diorama.
5:45 Students report to the library to prepare for the performance and parents can go to the cafetorium.
     6:00-7:00 Performance
7:00 Students can come by the classroom and take their research report and diorama home:)

2. Homework: There was no homework sent home this week:) Ms. Hernandez and I thought they could use a couple of weeks off. We kept the Thursday folders, as well, and will send them home after break.

3. If you are interested in summer tutoring for your child, below is the link to Mrs. Stromberg's sign up. She is a 2nd grade teacher at Westerly Creek and offers summer tutoring. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0544a8ab28a1f49-mrs

Also, there was a blue flyer sent home last week about Camp Explore that Mrs. Marshall (1st grade)and Mrs. Bateman (Kinder) do each summer.

4. Math: We began studying Geometry last week and will continue this week with an introduction to fractions beginning Wednesday. Students have learned about 2D and 2D shapes, finding their similar attributes by looking at sides and vertices (corners) and composite shapes. Composite shapes are a large shape made up of smaller shapes. The students REALLY liked making composite shapes! We will begin studying fractions this week and notice the differences between 1/2 and 1/4.

5. Science: We will be wrapping up our Animal Research projects this week and using Science time to prepare for the performance:) After Spring Break we will begin a weather unit and lifecycle unit. Fun times!!

If anything else comes up during the week, I will let you know! Thanks so much!!

Mrs. Bryan-Doherty:)
