Classroom Update for week of March 21st

Here are some photos of the last week's activities in our busy classroom!

Students did an organized plan of what they wanted their diorama to look like before starting construct it.

Building 2D and 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. Easier to count the sides and vertices this way:)

Diorama time!!

The students have done an AMAZING job on their dioramas!!

Learning about composite shapes; a large shape made up of smaller shapes.

After building the composite shape with blocks, students then traced the shapes they used onto paper using a shape template:)

Hello! I hope you all were able to enjoy this first day of Spring! On that note, please remember that our Spring Break week is March 28th-April 1st. Here is everything else you need to know for this busy week...

Specials Schedule:
Monday: A Day (Art)
Tuesday: B Day (Technology)
Wednesday: C Day (Drama)
Thursday: D Day (Gym)
Friday: E Day (Music)

1. The 1st Grade Performance is this Thursday at 6 p.m. in the cafetorium. There will be a day performance, as well, at 10 a.m. for the school kiddos. Here is the schedule for Thursday evening...
4:00-5:45 Parents can come to the      classroom and see their child's animal        research report and diorama.
5:45 Students report to the library to prepare for the performance and parents can go to the cafetorium.
     6:00-7:00 Performance
7:00 Students can come by the classroom and take their research report and diorama home:)

2. Homework: There was no homework sent home this week:) Ms. Hernandez and I thought they could use a couple of weeks off. We kept the Thursday folders, as well, and will send them home after break.

3. If you are interested in summer tutoring for your child, below is the link to Mrs. Stromberg's sign up. She is a 2nd grade teacher at Westerly Creek and offers summer tutoring. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0544a8ab28a1f49-mrs

Also, there was a blue flyer sent home last week about Camp Explore that Mrs. Marshall (1st grade)and Mrs. Bateman (Kinder) do each summer.

4. Math: We began studying Geometry last week and will continue this week with an introduction to fractions beginning Wednesday. Students have learned about 2D and 2D shapes, finding their similar attributes by looking at sides and vertices (corners) and composite shapes. Composite shapes are a large shape made up of smaller shapes. The students REALLY liked making composite shapes! We will begin studying fractions this week and notice the differences between 1/2 and 1/4.

5. Science: We will be wrapping up our Animal Research projects this week and using Science time to prepare for the performance:) After Spring Break we will begin a weather unit and lifecycle unit. Fun times!!

If anything else comes up during the week, I will let you know! Thanks so much!!

Our weeks have been very busy!! I'm amazed by the amount of learning, academically and socially, that these kiddos are doing on a daily basis. We are continuing to implement the Personal Success Factors into our morning meeting time. We discuss what it means to have grit, zest, gratitude, self-control, optimism, curiosity and social/emotional intelligence. Here are examples of the questions we discuss during morning meetings...
  • How can challenges make your brain stronger?
  • Think of something that used to be a
challenge for you. How did you overcome this challenge?
  • Think of a time when you noticed that someone could do something better or more
easily than you could. How did you
    feel about this?
  • How can "self-control" help you when solving a problem with a classmate?
Students have a chance to share their thoughts with their partners and share with the group. We have also been spending time talking about how to solve conflicts with other students in the classroom and outside the classroom. I appreciate the time and energy the students put into this work every morning. It builds our classroom climate and provides a stable learning environment. Watch for little slips coming home that state what Personal Success Factor your kiddo exhibited that day:)
Here is all you need to know for this week...

Specials Schedule:
Monday: A Day (Art)
Tuesday: B Day (Technology)
Wednesday: C Day (Drama)
Thursday: D Day (Gym)
Friday: E Day (Music)

PLEASE SEND A WATER BOTTLE ON MONDAYS AND A SNACK EVERYDAY!! These kiddos are hungry and an afternoon snack really helps!

1. Please send in a shoe box (or a similar sized box) for your  child's animal diorama by this Friday March 18th. I have received some classroom funds to spend on the materials for the students to use to recreate their animal's habitat. If students would like to, they can bring in tiny branches, leaves, grass, etc. to add to their diorama. Thank you for your help with this!!

2. The 1st Grade Performance is March 24th. Here is the schedule for that evening...

*4:15-5:45 - Animal projects on display in classrooms, please come and walk through with your child
*5:45 - First Graders report to the library, all parents report to the cafeteria
*6:00 - First Grade Showcase performance begins in cafeteria

3. NO SCHOOL: March 28th- April 1st Spring Break

4. Math: We begin our Geometry unit this week followed by a unit on fractions. Students will be learning names of shapes, number of corners (vertices) and sides (faces). They will build 2D shapes with marshmallows and toothpicks and discover how they can use this to make a 3D shape. For example, how a rectangle can be the base for a rectangular prism. If your child would like to bring in ONE 2D or 3D item for our shape museum, they may. Examples would be cereal box, soup can, paper towel roll, etc.

5. Science: We will be continuing to work on animal dioramas this week. Next week, we will begin our Lifecycle unit. Looking at the lifecycles of animals and plants. I have ordered caterpillars and tadpoles so students can have an opportunity to see part of the lifecycle up close!

I believe that is all for now. If anything else comes up, as always, I will let you know. Thank you!!

Mrs. Bryan-Doherty:)
