3. Field Trip money: Thank you to everyone who has sent in field trip money! If you have not sent it in yet, please send $25 with your child on Monday. This money covers all 3 field trips for the school year. Our first field trip will be February 10th to the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts to see a play "Junie B. Jones" and do an art activity. We will be leaving school at 9 and returning at 1:45. I will send more details as it gets closer:)

4. Valentine's Party: Our party will be Friday, February 12th at 2:45 in the classroom. Please send your kiddo with Valentine's to pass out. I do not have them put student's names on them. It takes a VERY long time to pass them out. Without names, it goes much faster. Thank you!

5. 100th Day of School: Our 100th day of school actually falls on the same day as the Valentine's party (go figure). Therefore, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Friday, February 19th. In next week's Thursday folder will be a project for kiddos to complete at home centered around a "100 Day collection" to share during Math.

6. Animal Research Projects: Starting next week, students will begin researching an animals for a research paper to be completed during Writer's Workshop. The research will be done during Social Studies, as well as, a poster or diorama. Students will choose an animal that they have some knowledge of but want to learn more about. These animal research papers and projects will be displayed in the classroom for parents to view the night of the 1st grade performance on March 17th. They will be amazing!

7. Social Studies: This past week we discussed a few black leaders for Black History month. We learned about Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks and George Washington Carver. Hopefully your child shared some facts about these amazing leaders with you:) On Monday, each table group will be planting a sweet potato plant to celebrate the work of botanist George Washington Carver. They will be measuring the plant/vine that grows over the next month. Last year the tallest plant/vine was over 4 feet tall!

8. Upcoming important days to remember:
February 15th: NO SCHOOL President's Day
February 29th: NO SCHOOL Assessment Day

I believe that's all for now! If anything else comes up, I will let you know! Have a great weekend!

Classroom Updates for Week of January 25th

Here are some snapshots from our learning this week!!

ER brought in his Volcano experiment to share with the class!
Making rock candy! Fingers crossed it works!
Using Math manipulatives to measure our friends!

Teaching our kindergarten Math buddies how to measure:)

Reading Scholastic News

Moses and Gela teaching the class about a strategy they used to keep track of how many cubes they had used to measure the desk. I LOVE when kiddos teach each other and take ownership of their learning:)

Watching the Alks-Seltzer tablet turn from a solid to a gas:)

Turning a solid to a liquid and back to solid using baking chocolate with a little help from some Oreos;)

Hello Everyone! What a busy week we have had! Our Science experiments were a hit! The only one we are still a little uncertain about is the rock candy. We are watching and waiting and if at once you don't succeed... try, try again. After all, it is an experiment:) The students have embraced a new Math station (Math Journals) where they have two weekly entries that they are responsible for completing. This is independent and really requires them to be following specific steps, being organized, recalling strategies and being neat. It has been really interesting to watch them go to it and own what they are doing. I am very proud of them! At the end of the school year they will each have an amazing journal full of their work to take home:)

Here is what you need to know for next week...

Specials Schedule:
Monday: C Day (Drama)
Tuesday: D Day (Gym) Remember gym shoes!
Wednesday: E Day (Music)
Thursday: A Day (Art)
Friday: B Day (Technology)

1. Remember to send a water bottle on Mondays and a snack every day!!

2. Field Trip Money: Please send in $25.00 by January 29th to cover all 3 of your child's field trips for the school year. Thank you so much!!

3. Valentine's Day party will be held on February 12th at 2:45. Details to follow:)

4. Social Studies: We will be celebrating Black History month for the next couple of weeks. We will be studying the following influential people...
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Rosa Parks
  • Harriet Tubman
  • Ruby Bridges
  • George Washington Carver
As always, I will make sure that all content that is shared with the students is "kid friendly" and anything that they are inquiring about that isn't appropriate for school will be directed to parents to explain. We are looking at these individuals as teachers of spreading peace and kindness, promoting equality and standing up for others. These are ALL things that we practice on a daily basis in our classroom:)

To connect Social Studies and Math we will be plating sweet potato plants and measuring the plants for the next couple of months. Last year, our tallest plant was 42 inches tall! We use sweet potatoes because George Washington Carver experimented with peanuts, sweet potatoes and other plants. He made lotions and created peanut butter:)

5. Math: We are continuing our measuring unit next week by looking at data and graphs. Students will be studying graphs and finding answers to questions and creating their graphs from data they have collected. Will be fun!

6. Homework: I hope the new format for the Math homework is working out for everyone! I sure enjoy using less paper;) I am keeping track of kiddos that are turning in their homework. This is a grading point on report cards. If I notice that a student isn't turning in their homework week to week, I will get in touch with parents to see how I can help. The hope is that Math takes 5 minutes, Writing take 5 minutes and then 20 minutes of reading.

7. I will be sending out a Slyreply for parents to sign up to come in to be a Math volunteer. Come on in and see the learning as it happens!

8. I will also be setting up a Shutterfly account to post classroom pictures. This way you can purchase any of them if you would like:)

Important Upcoming Dates:
February 15th: NO SCHOOL President's Day

I think that is all for now:) I will let you know if anything else comes up. Have a great weekend and.....GO BRONCOS!!
